Mockery- Godz n Monsterz

Zang, Sullivan Gill, Family Matters, beat by Myth. Our trip to the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown 2009 with Walter Sisulu University. Special appearance is Aidon Westcott http://www.aidonwestcott.co.za/

Enjoying art for arts and community development.

Godz n Monsters are a crew born and hustled in them streets of Mdantsane. A crew of different creative minds embracing some elements of hip hop culture such as Emceeing, Producing and Graffiti. The whole East London crowd knows of these lyrical raw materials with a kasi Xhosalized English content.

Under the name of Rabbit Outda Hat (RODH) a production company was born. Where sacred diabolic grimy dungeon beats with a bit of kasi melancholy and nostalgic tragic vibe were used as pages of their dairies. Politics, social issues, witchcraft, literature, art, philosophy and science played a role as subject matter for verses. Cats are now doing their own businesses you can follow them on Facebook.

Reflecting on Lines of Power

Electric power lines have been explored as a metaphor for psychological boundaries; exploring a tension between those who have and who have no electricity. Nkosinkulu incorporates new techniques such as mixing of cement with wood glue and burn the canvas with a blow torch to create textured surfaces. Torn pieces of maps of Mdantsane are collaged and various strings have been burnt on top of waxed surfaces. These processes are complimented with oils and form a body of work that encourages soul searching.

Nkosinkulu’s art has now developed into video installation art exploring themes of transcendence and immersion. His work incorporates water as a symbol of mediator to help us navigate through the quest of self discovery. His new work is in progress...

Couchlock Designs

Some few designs I’m working on for t-shirts and logos. The design at Cochlock is based on elements of hip hop culture and they represent the hustle in the streets of Mdantsane.

                                                   EXPERIMENTAL photography.

This series of photos was an experiment I was busy with in the studio. Trying to explore the fascination of moths with light and use that as a metaphor for “izinyoka”, which in Mdantsane case happened to be the youth who lives in squatter camps and I call them ‘light seekers’. Moths are attracted to light but as soon as they reach it they get burnt. In a similar metaphorical way, ‘light seekers’ are attracted to light which will open new possibilities of knowledge. With luminosity one can see, gain awareness, learn, live and work in a same way we would reach our spiritual enlightenment with the light inside our souls. Light Seekers is a project I’m still busy with trying to refine it and polish it for you... enjoy.

Billboard Destruction and Hood Reconstruction: Me2  and Xeno going beyond what the TV feeds the eye of the society.

Graffiti art is one of the elements of Hip Hop Culture. Hip Hop Culture is made of five elements which are DJing, MCing, Graffiti, Breaking and Knowledge of Self. Mdantsane is a very artistically underdeveloped community while youth is developed by influences from TV and corporate companies invade our public spaces by sticking images of their products on our public walls. We are forced to see these images in everyday of our lives while we are also stuck with images of being someone one day. Hip Hop Culture has managed to influence us to rebel against the hardship and limited education we receive in our society. We use public art to communicate to the public in a creative way. By painting over a mural of a famous South African soapie SCANDAL we commenting on the fact that the youth is encouraged to sit and watch soapies.  Instead we hope to encourage youth to be aware of creative experession, public space access and privacy invasion.

Painting of ME2 at my home garadge, chilling with Godz' n Monsters. Cameraman iz Diffa ( Muz).
